About the Instructor
Martha Frank, Ph.D, OTR/L has a Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Therapy/Biology from Utica College of Syracuse University, Masters Degree in Education/Special Education from College of St. Rose, a Certificate of Advanced Study in Literacy from the University at Albany (SUNYA) and a Doctorate (PhD) from the University at Albany (SUNYA).
Martha founded Whispering Pines Preschool in 1987 to serve children and families in an environment that promotes participation and learning. She is licensed in New York State as an Occupational Therapist. Martha is also a permanently certified teacher in preschool, elementary and special education in New York State and is permanently certified as a School District Supervisor and School District Administrator in New York. Martha has specialized her clinical practice in the areas of preschool and early intervention. She is also viewed as a specialist in the area of Sensory Integration and presents at local, regional and national level conferences in the areas of Sensory Processing, Working with Young Children with Autism, Developing Early Literacy Skills in Children and Developmental Dyspraxia.
About the Program
We all share a passionate commitment to healthy relationships between babies and their caregivers. Yet how much do we know about how key relationships and experiences affect the way infants and very young children will grow to experience themselves in the world? How does the sense world of the child impact brain development? How do the earliest relationships impact the child’s experience of the sense world? In this full-day workshop, Martha Frank, OT and Sensory Processing (SP) specialist and practitioner will share her expertise and experiences in supporting children, to provide us with a solid foundation for understanding the dynamic field of SP and the role relationships play. Dr. Frank will guide us to a deeper understanding of the components of SP, what promotes healthy integration, and what can get in the way. She will use case studies to help us fine-tune our professional observation and intervention skills.
Participants will be able to:
- Identify the components of Sensory Processing
- Make a connection between SP and brain development
- Have a historical perspective on the understanding of SP
- Recognize the kinds of experiences children need to become integrated into the sense world
- Recognize factors that inhibit SP
- Apply insights and tools gained in the workshop to their own professional practice
